Jarablus School and Community Centre

Designed in a Syrian town hosting a large population of internally displaced people, this school is conceived as a second home for children, supporting learning, play, and social integration between displaced and host communities. The building functions both as a daytime school and an evening community hub. A diverse sequence of spaces accommodates different modes of learning and interaction, from intimate courtyards and quiet niches to open gardens and collective gathering areas. A central courtyard and multipurpose hall form the social heart of the school and can merge to host larger community events and performances. Classrooms are designed for flexibility, allowing reconfiguration into larger shared spaces for collaborative activities. Environmental comfort is achieved through shaded colonnades, dual-aspect classrooms, and carefully oriented courtyards that balance light and shade throughout the day. Constructed using compressed earth blocks and timber, the project celebrates local materials while promoting sustainable building practices and community-based craftsmanship.
